Walking Again

Posted by Joe Deegan (Waterville, ME, United States) on 13 September 2008 in Miscellaneous.

Not yet sure why I am here, I
spend my time walking through
this city that quite apparently cannot decide what to be:

crumbling, vestigial apartment blocks,
next to proud 13th century temples
next to shiny and self conscious towers of steel and glass.

All around me there is the letting go of things.
The trees, having known many autumns,
give up their leaves early.
People come out in the mornings
to beat the dust out of rugs.

So to the swirling piles of leaves,
to the dust floating awhile in the sun,
to the cracked glass and crumbling stone
and the giving over to newness,
I contribute the uncomplicated echo of my footsteps,

Retaining all the while my own bold ambivalence
about myself.
