Foregrounded

Days like these I gamble away until,
by nighttime I am deflated, finding
myself to be elaborately courteous, waiting
too long holding a door for the next party.

And eating hurriedly I wish not to be seen
I imagine myself under surveillance,
watched from the perspective of nowhere,
the forces of life, the universe,
exerting their pressure on me,
pushing, pushing,

until these thoughts are just another
hard mute diamond
